Make Your Wish

Making a wish...

It can give you hope, give you something to anticipate, push you to make something come true, or make you believe that anything is possible.

Walking up to The American Theater in Charleston and reading these words that my twin sister had put up there just for me (what!) unlocked something in me. This past year has been filled with a lot of questions and open thoughts like, "what's next?" and "what's right?"
Most of the time, these questions have been taken in with an indescribable excitement for opportunity and a passion to search for whatever it is that makes us feel most alive. These questions can also feel quite scary and make you question your path, question if you're accomplishing enough to make yourself proud and make you wonder if there is something more you're destined for. I hadn't realized how much I was losing sight of the hopeful expectation and excitement for what's ahead and replacing it with doubt and fear until I saw these words up there.

Ben and I followed Megan downtown the morning we were leaving Charleston and this surprise was waiting there. This theater has always made us stop and marvel when we are in town as amazing feelings of  love and magic sink in whenever we look up at it. I've seen countless messages and dreams come true lit up on that sign, including quotes from "The Notebook", baby announcements and proposals. As it started coming into view on our walk, I first saw the word "believe" and knew that this message was just for me...

When I read those words, I felt something inside of me change. As shocked as I was to be in this moment looking up at this dream come true that my twin gave to me,  it was the words she chose to put up there that meant so much more than the grand gesture. I suddenly felt myself letting go of all of my fears, self doubt, and worries and knew that none of that mattered anymore. It hit me in the most freeing way that it is okay to relentlessly seek out what you truly wish for in life. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, what they want for you, or where they want you to be. You can make your wish. You can follow what feels wonderful. You can have it all.

The three of us stood in front of the sign with tears in our eyes and Megan read the full quote to us:

"Make a wish and place it in your heart. Anything you want. Everything you want. Do you have it? Good. Now believe it can come true. You never know where the next miracle is going to come from, the next smile. The next wish come true. But if you believe that it is right around the corner. And you open your heart and mind to the possibility of it. To the certainty of it. You just might get the thing you're wishing for. The world is full of magic. You just have to believe in it. So make your wish. Do you have it? Good. Now believe in it. With all your heart." - One Tree Hill
